ACI CELEBRATES TEACHERS’ DAY

The ACI (Aemilianum College Inc.) had its culminating activity in sync with the World Teacher’s Day Celebration last October 5, 2012 at the school Auditorium with the theme, “My Teacher, My Hero.”

With the flagship of Sci-Math Club (Science and Math Club), several activities were postered. It started with a holy mass where in the teachers were blest by Rev. Fr. Romel Ermita,CRS, school director. Soon after, the teachers wearing blindfolds, proceeded at the school auditorium with the “good” students as their escorts.

Several presentations were prepared by the students for their teachers. That intend to give deepest thanks for nurturing their minds. The teachers enjoyed the entire duration of the performances.

Indeed, the realization that teachers are one of the most influential individuals in the society that greatly affects students’ human moral and discipline makes them today’s heroes.

GO FOR INTRAMS, RAIN OR SHINE

The abrupt weather changes did not stop Aemilianum College to go on to celebrate its annual Intramurals and Foundation Day, last September 24-27, 2012, with this year’s theme, “Breaking Free, Soaring High.”

Although weather disturbances complemented with the entire duration of the event, it didn’t hinder the athletic Aemilians to go for gold and pursue the foretold celebration.

First day, September 24, a holy mass was presided by the school director, Rev. Fr. Romel Ermita, CRS with Rev. Fr. Bob Sabayton, CRS. This was immediately followed by the opening program and the formal opening of Intramurals. In the afternoon, the prestigious search for this year’s Mr. & Ms. ACI and Mr. & Ms. Intrams was also held.

September 25, day two, a prompt parade was organized that paced downtown. Next to it was the first-ever kite flying competition in relevance with this year’s theme. The afternoon signated the beginning of playing each sports games. Lots of players tried bringing home the bacon. The games include: Volleyball, soccer (both boys and girls division); Badminton (singles and doubles); sepak takraw, chess and basketball. It lasted up to September 27 where everybody was surprisingly able to sustain their energies throughout.

After all the herculean fight, Team D (Seniors) was declared as the overall champion, followed by Team C (Juniors), Team B (Sophomores) & Team A (Freshmen) respectively. On September 28, the awarding as well as the Victory Ball embraced the weary but happy spirits of the Aemilians.
The blessing of the statue of St. Jerome, school’s patron saint, also served as one of the event’s highlights.

A SAINT’S DESPIDIDA

The visit of St. Jerome Emiliani’s first class relic finally comte to it’s end last July 30, 2012. The ending is but an exciting one, a fun, a party. A time for the school to give thanks to it’s one and only patron saint. A celebration somewhat the same as a Despidida Party.

The celebraton or shall I say “Sacred Party” started with a holy mass presided by the most Rev. Fr. Arturu N. Bastes, Bishop of Diocese of Sorsogon as the main celebrant along woth the somascan Fathers, Fr. BobSabayton CRS, school chaplain of ACI and Fr. Romel Ermita, school director as a co-celebrants. The mass was highlighted by Fr. Bastes’ homily which stresses the importance of faith of God andlove to our neighbors rather than valuing wealth and any othermaterial things. This was completely lived by St. Jerome. And Aemilians did listen and feel this very message.

The mass was immediately followed by the second part of the party.  A program prepared by the ACI Faculty and staff and students both from hihscool and college was held. Several manifestations of talents were on air, such as
Teatro Emiliani portraying St. Jeromes’ life, IDC (Intensity Dance Crew) showing their dancing aptitudes, and lastly is the intermission number from St. Miani’s adapted sons and daughters. From Casa Miani and Jardin de Maria. The number seemed to deliver a sensation of gratitude for providing them, the abandoned, and environment that they have now. Also, Fr. Rommel gave such inspirin message.

Lastly , the party would not be called a party without EATING. There was a large buffet served at the gym that welcomed lots of eaters and visitors. The food seemed to say “Comefill your stomachs, eat all you can.”

Everyone was so happy not because of the food or any other but rahter, because a Saint happen to visit them and gave them the best Despidida party the could ever attemd. Goodluck St. Jerome! Have a safetrip. J

Nutrition Month

NUTRITION MONTH

Nutrition Month is a special health awareness campaign that is held every March. Created by the American Dietetic Association, the event is dedicated to bringing attention to various aspects of nutrition. This includes the importance of making informed food choices as well as developing and maintaining good eating habits. Apart from that, the campaign also works towards building awareness around the need for regular physical activity. The campaign was established in 1973, when it was just a week-long event. By 1980, national interest in nutrition had increased and so the week-long event was extended to a monthlong campaign.

Why It's Important?

National Nutrition Month isn't 'just another health thing'. The fact is that the majority of diseases that affect Americans today can be traced back to bad nutrition and unsound eating habits. Apart from that, a number of chronic conditions can be greatly improved by making healthy eating choices. By opting for a nutritionally sound diet, your body immediately gains access to higher energy levels. By breaking down components like carbohydrates, proteins, amino acids, vitamins and minerals, the body can repair and replenish itself. Unhealthy or junk foods don't provide anything that the body can use - apart from that; it needs to work twice as hard to push those extra toxins out of the body.
There is a very simple way to see how this works in real life. After a person has done a workout or played a hard game of basketball, the best thing they can do is drink water. Not only does it quench the thirst, it also re-hydrates the body and replenishes the mineral salts that were lost through sweating. The worst thing to do is have a soft drink. Its high sugar content actually robs the body of water and can cause muscles to cramp. If a person has had a soda after a long run, chances are that they will end up being thirstier with a bad leg cramp later on. Today it is probably harder than ever to eat right, especially when fast foods seem like a more convenient option to a healthy meal. But there are a number of tips you can keep in mind to incorporate more nutrition into your daily diet.

Nutrition Tips

You can celebrate your own health and National Nutrition Month by keeping a few helpful health hints in mind. First of all, think fresh. Stock up on fresh fruits, vegetables, seeds and nuts. Store these in small containers in your fridge so that they are easily accessible when you want a quick snack. You can also take them with you to work or even if you're just going to take a long drive. Snacking on fruits, nuts and vegetables is a much healthier choice as they are fat and sugar free. Unlike junk food, snacking on healthy foods will actually kill hunger pangs rather than just mask them.
Most people tend to create their meals around the meat dishes they eat. Instead of doing this, try reducing the portions of meat and starch and increase the portions of fresh vegetables. Incorporating whole grains and cutting out things like ketchup and creamy salad dressings is also good. Using fresh herbs and spices for seasoning can not only be a tastier option, it's nutritionally sound as well. It's also a good idea to drink more water - avoid drinking artificially sweetened fruit juices or sodas. The more water you drink, the more toxins get flushed out of your body.
In situations where it just isn't possible to eat healthy, try and eat as healthy as you can. For example, instead of burgers, order a grilled cheese sandwich. Eating in a nutritionally sound way might be a little hard at first but you'll feel the difference right away. Celebrating National Nutrition Month is an effective way to get your health back on track.

Food Pyramid

Planning your meals may be intimidating at first, but proper meal planning is a big advantage if you want to control your blood sugar naturally. The rule is to have a balanced diet that includes the right amount of protein, carbohydrates and fats, with enough vitamins and minerals. Healthy meals normally revolve around grains, fruits and vegetables, with meat as a side dish only. A visit to your nutritionist or dietitian can help you understand your nutritional needs and simplify the planning.

Nothing can replace consulting with a nutritionist for your individual meal planning. But the Food Pyramid can guide you on what to eat and how much of these food to eat in a day. To know what to eat, the rule is simple: eat more of the food at the base of the pyramid and less at the tip.
How much to eat of these foods is a little tricky. Notice the number of servings for each group? It does not answer your exact intake need because it is based on the average person who needs about 1,000 and up daily calorie intake. You may need less or more depending on your weight, height, age, sex, activity and health condition. So it’s still best to ask your nutritionist how much of each serving suits you. So why put the servings in the pyramid? Just to tell you in a nice way to eat more grains, vegetables and fruits and less meat and fatty food.
Well, there’s another way to give you an idea how much to eat of these food. Instead of grouping the food according to their kind (vegetables, meats, oils…), let’s group them according to their organic compounds; that is, carbohydrates, proteins and fats. Grains, vegetables and fruits belong to carbohydrates; meat, fish, nuts and dairy to proteins; and fatty and oily food to fats. The pie below roughly tells you how much of these groups to take in a day.

St. Jerome Emiliani

Jerome was born in Venice, the son of Angelo Emiliani (popularly called Miani) and Eleonore Mauroceni. He joined the army and, in 1508, defended Castelnuovo against the League of Cambray. Taken prisoner and miraculously liberated, he made a pilgrimage to the shrine of Our Lady of Treviso, in fulfillment of a vow. He was then appointed podestà (Venetian magistrate) of Castelnuovo, but after a short time returned to Venice to supervise the education of his nephews. All his spare time was devoted to the study of theology and to works of charity.
The hospitals and the hovels of the poor were his favorite resorts. In the year of plague and famine (1528), he seemed to be everywhere and showed his zeal, especially for the orphans, whose number had so greatly increased. He rented a house for them near the church of St. Rose and, with the assistance of some pious laymen, ministered to their wants. To his charge was also committed the hospital for incurables, founded by St. Cajetan. In 1531 he went to Verona and induced the citizens to build a hospital; in Brescia, Bergamo, Milan and other places in northern Italy, he erected orphanages, both for boys and for girls.
Two priests, Alessandro Besuzio and Agostino Bariso, then joined him in his labors of charity, and in 1532 Gerolamo founded a religious society, placing the motherhouse at Somasca, a secluded North Italian hamlet in the Comune of Vercurago between Milan and Bergamo, after which the members became known as Somaschi. In the Rule of this Society, Gerolamo stated the principal work of the community was the care of orphans, poor and sick, and demanded that dwellings, food and clothing would bear the mark of religious poverty.
St Jerome fell a martyr to his zeal; contracting a disease at Bergamo, he died at Somasca in 1537.
